Smart Energy Meter & Breaker / Installation

Can I use smart meter with solar or inverter system?

Short answer: No. Our standard smart energy meters are not suitable for solar or inverter systems unless the model specifically supports bidirectional energy flow measurement.

Explanation

Solar and inverter systems may have both incoming and outgoing electricity flow. A normal smart energy meter is usually designed to measure one-way electricity usage only. For solar or inverter applications, the meter must support forward and reverse electricity flow measurement, also known as import and export energy measurement. Our standard smart meter models should not be used for this purpose unless the product specification clearly states that bidirectional measurement is supported.

Common mistakes

  • Do not assume a normal smart energy meter can be used for solar or inverter systems. A meter that only measures one-way usage may give incorrect readings or may not work properly in bidirectional power flow situations.

Troubleshooting / next steps

  • If you need to monitor solar, inverter, import/export electricity, or net energy usage, please consult a qualified electrician and choose a meter specifically designed for bidirectional energy measurement.
