Smart Switches / Capacitor
Can one capacitor support multiple smart switch gangs?
Short answer: It depends on the product design. Many no-neutral switches specify the capacitor position for the first load, usually L1.
Explanation
For many multi-gang no-neutral smart switches, the capacitor is installed on the first lighting circuit, commonly L1. However, this is model-specific. Some products may have different requirements depending on gang count, load type and wiring design. Always follow the included wiring diagram and do not add extra capacitors unless instructed by the manufacturer.
Common mistakes
- Adding one capacitor per gang without guidance
- installing the capacitor on the wrong gang
- assuming all multi-gang switches use the same wiring method.
Troubleshooting / next steps
- Check the wiring diagram for the exact gang count. If only one light flickers, verify which load the capacitor is connected to.
