Does Matter need a hub?

Short answer: For the Matter devices we currently sell, yes. They need a compatible Matter controller/hub for normal smart home use and remote/platform control.

Explanation

For the Matter devices we currently sell, a compatible Matter controller or hub is needed for normal smart home use. Examples include supported Google Home speakers/displays, Apple HomePod, Apple TV, or other Matter-compatible controllers depending on the platform.

Matter is not the same as Zigbee. A Matter over WiFi device may connect to your WiFi network directly, but it still needs a Matter controller to be added properly to Apple Home, Google Home or another platform and to support remote access and automation through that platform.

Some devices may be added locally by phone during setup, but if there is no supported Matter controller/hub at the location, the device may not remain available for remote control when you are away.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking Matter is the same as Zigbee gateway
  • assuming WiFi means no controller is needed
  • adding a device to phone locally and expecting remote control without HomePod/Google speaker/controller.

Troubleshooting / next steps

  • Before buying Matter devices, confirm which platform you want to use and whether you already have a compatible Matter controller/hub at the location.
