Should I choose universal remote, smart switch or smart plug for air conditioner?
Explanation
For most air conditioners, a WiFi universal IR remote is usually the better choice because it can send infrared commands such as power, temperature, mode, fan speed and swing. This is closer to how the original air conditioner remote works.
A smart switch or smart plug mainly controls electrical power on/off. It does not normally control temperature, mode, fan speed or swing. It also must be rated for the air conditioner load, especially because air conditioners can draw high current during startup.
If the goal is proper aircon automation, schedule control or voice control, recommend a WiFi universal IR remote when the aircon uses IR remote. If the goal is electrical power isolation or high-current control, use a properly rated switch, relay, contactor or other suitable device and have the installation checked by an electrician.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a smart plug because it is cheaper
- using a normal lighting smart switch for aircon load
- thinking power on/off is the same as aircon control
- forgetting that IR remote cannot receive real-time feedback from the aircon.
Troubleshooting / next steps
- Check whether the aircon uses an infrared remote. If yes, recommend a WiFi universal IR remote for automation. For power control, confirm the load rating and installation method with an electrician.
