Smart Energy Meter & Breaker / Protection

What is over-voltage protection?

Short answer: Over-voltage protection turns off the output when the voltage goes above the configured limit, if the model supports this function.

Explanation

Over-voltage protection is a configurable function on some smart energy meters or protection breakers. When the measured voltage goes above the set limit, the device may cut off the output to protect the connected circuit.

The available voltage limit, delay setting and recovery behaviour depend on the exact model and app. Not every meter supports the same settings.

This should not be confused with a prepaid kWh or usage-limit function. A usage-limit function cuts off after a set amount of electricity has been used, while over-voltage protection is triggered by voltage level.

Common mistakes

  • Calling prepaid kWh or usage limit 'over-energy protection'
  • assuming every meter supports over-voltage cut-off
  • using the smart meter as a replacement for proper electrical protection.

Troubleshooting / next steps

  • Check the device settings in the app for over-voltage limit and recovery options. If the function is not shown, the model may not support it.
