Which appliances can a universal remote control?
Explanation
A universal remote can control appliances that use infrared remote control, such as many air conditioners, TVs, fans, set-top boxes and audio devices. It needs line-of-sight or suitable IR reflection to reach the appliance.
Some universal remote models support both IR and RF. However, RF compatibility is more selective. The RF frequency must match, and the encoding or remote control protocol must also be compatible. Even if the frequency looks correct, it may still not work if the encoding is different.
Bluetooth appliances or app-only appliances normally cannot be controlled by a standard IR universal remote unless the product specifically supports that integration.
Common mistakes
- Assuming all RF remotes can be copied
- checking frequency only but not encoding
- expecting IR remote to control Bluetooth appliances
- placing the IR remote without line-of-sight.
Troubleshooting / next steps
- Confirm whether the original remote is IR or RF. For RF, check frequency and test learning. If learning fails, the encoding may not be supported. For IR, place the universal remote where it can reach the appliance.
