Why do smart home devices need 2.4GHz WiFi?
Explanation
Most WiFi smart switches, smart plugs, smart meters, universal remotes and many other smart home devices are designed to connect to 2.4GHz WiFi. 2.4GHz WiFi usually has better wall penetration and longer range compared with 5GHz, which makes it more suitable for small smart home devices. 5GHz WiFi is faster for phones and computers, but many smart home devices do not support 5GHz. During pairing, your phone should connect to the same 2.4GHz WiFi network. After pairing, your phone can usually use 5GHz or mobile data to control the device through the app.
Common mistakes
- Do not use a 5GHz-only WiFi network for pairing. Do not assume that fast phone internet means the 2.4GHz signal is stable. Do not place the device too far from the router during pairing.
Troubleshooting / next steps
- If pairing fails, connect your phone to 2.4GHz WiFi, move closer to the router, check the WiFi password, use WPA2 if possible, and temporarily separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi names if the router uses the same SSID.
