Smart Switches / Installation

Can I install a smart switch if I only have live wire and load wire?

Short answer: Yes, but only with a no-neutral or 2-in-1 model that supports this wiring, and a capacitor may be required.

Explanation

If your switch box only has live wire and load wire, it likely does not have a neutral wire available at the switch. You cannot use a neutral-required smart switch in this situation unless new wiring is added. Instead, choose a no-neutral or 2-in-1 smart switch that supports no-neutral installation. For many WiFi no-neutral models, the capacitor must be installed at the light side for stable operation.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a neutral-required switch
  • not installing the capacitor
  • assuming two wires means any smart switch will work.

Troubleshooting / next steps

  • Confirm the exact wire function with an electrician. Choose a no-neutral compatible model and follow the correct wiring diagram.
