Smart Switches / Installation

Can I replace a conventional 2-way switch with a smart switch?

Short answer: Sometimes, but conventional 2-way wiring is not always directly compatible and may need to be rewired.

Explanation

A conventional 2-way switch circuit allows two physical switches to control the same light. Many standard smart switches are designed for 1-way control, so the existing 2-way wiring may need to be changed.

In many installations, the conventional 2-way wiring can be converted to work like a 1-way smart switch, or one side can be kept always on while control is handled by the smart switch, wireless scene switch or app automation.

The correct method depends on your existing wiring, the smart switch model and whether neutral wire is available. Ask a qualified electrician to inspect the wiring before purchase or installation.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every smart switch can replace a 2-way switch directly
  • removing wires without labelling them
  • ignoring neutral/no-neutral requirements.

Troubleshooting / next steps

  • Take clear photos of both switch boxes before removing any wires. Confirm whether you need true physical 2-way control or app/wireless control is acceptable.
