Smart Switches / Installation

Does the smart switch include a capacitor?

Short answer: The capacitor is included with purchase for 2-in-1 smart switches and no-neutral smart switches. Pure neutral-wire versions do not include a capacitor and should not be used with one.

Explanation

This depends on the switch version. If the product is a 2-in-1 smart switch or a no-neutral smart switch, the capacitor will be provided together with the switch because it may be required for no-neutral installation. If the product is a pure neutral-wire version, a capacitor is not included because that version is designed to work with a neutral wire only. Adding a capacitor to a pure neutral-wire switch will not make it work as a no-neutral switch and should not be used as a workaround.

Common mistakes

  • Do not assume every smart switch includes a capacitor. Do not add a capacitor to a pure neutral-wire switch to try to convert it into a no-neutral switch.
