Smart Switches / Neutral Wire

Can I add a neutral wire to the switch box?

Short answer: In some homes it is possible, but it depends on the existing wiring route and should only be done by a qualified electrician.
Intermediate Last reviewed: 2026-06-26

Explanation

Adding a neutral wire may be possible if the wiring route allows it, but it is not always simple. It may require pulling new wires from the light fitting, junction box or distribution point into the switch box. This should only be assessed and done by a qualified electrician. If adding neutral is not practical, consider a no-neutral or 2-in-1 smart switch instead.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to convert wiring without understanding the circuit
  • using earth wire as neutral
  • modifying wiring without testing.

Troubleshooting / next steps

  • Ask an electrician to inspect whether neutral can be added safely. Do not use earth wire as neutral.
