Smart Switches / Neutral Wire
Why do some homes not have a neutral wire at the switch?
Short answer: Many conventional lighting circuits only bring live and load wires to the wall switch because mechanical switches do not need their own power supply.
Explanation
Traditional mechanical switches only open and close the live circuit. Because the switch itself does not need electricity to operate, many older or conventional lighting circuits do not bring neutral wire into the wall switch box. The neutral wire may be located at the light fitting instead. Smart switches are different because they contain electronics that need power, so neutral wire availability becomes important.
Common mistakes
- Thinking no-neutral wiring is abnormal
- assuming old houses cannot use smart switches
- buying a neutral-required switch without checking wiring.
Troubleshooting / next steps
- Choose a no-neutral or 2-in-1 model if neutral is not available, and install the capacitor if required.
