Explanation

Matter is a smart home standard, but Matter devices can use different connection methods. Matter over WiFi devices connect to your home WiFi network, usually through your router. This is common for devices that need more power or bandwidth, such as smart switches, smart plugs, cameras, or appliances. Matter over Thread devices use Thread, a low-power mesh network designed for smart home devices such as sensors, buttons, locks, and other low-power devices. Thread devices do not connect directly to your normal WiFi router. They usually need a compatible Thread Border Router, such as a supported smart speaker, hub, or Apple Home device. For normal use, many Matter devices also need a compatible Matter controller, especially if you want to control them through Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings and use remote control.

Common mistakes

  • Do not assume every Matter device connects the same way. Do not assume Matter always means no hub is needed. Matter over WiFi and Matter over Thread have different requirements. A Thread device usually needs a Thread Border Router, while a WiFi Matter device needs a stable WiFi connection.
